Keratin is the raw material of hair, skin and nails. Keratin is a protein made up of 18 amino acids. It is created by combining amino acids in the hair follicle during hair formation. Keratin is a protein that contains high amount of sulfur, which means that it provides resistance against chemicals. Keratin is insoluble in water. The health of the hair depends on adequate keratin synthesis, which is achieved with adequate protein intake via diet. Chicken, fish and meats are the best sources for this.

Benefits of Keratin for Hair

While keratin benefits our hair and skin through diet, it is used externally in cosmetics. Formulas containing cationic hydrolyzed keratin are applied to the hair as a conditioner or shampoo. After the application, keratin peptides hold on the hair strands and repair the damaged areas in the hair, resulting in a smoother and brighter appearance. Cosmetic formulas containing keratin are among the most effective preparations for long hair care.

How to Apply Keratin Care

While applying Keratin, the hair must be washed with shampoo first. You should dry your hair until all moisture is gone. Next, the keratin-containing formula is applied to the hair, and the whole hair is combed for keratin to penetrate. Then dry your hair once more and continue to comb.

In another process called Brazilian blow-dry, a formula containing keratin and formaldehyde is applied to the hair with the help of a high-temperature tong. It is applied 5-6 times from root to tip at 130-150 Celsius with heated curling iron, as a result, the hair is permanently straightened. This process should be done in a well-ventilated place. If formaldehyde vapors are inhaled, hazardous consequences can occur.
