Hair Falls Out More in Fall!

20.02.21

For centuries, hair is aesthetically important for women. We shape and take care of our hair all the time. Our hair changes our posture and mood, that’s why, hair loss is also a big problem. Well, is hair loss seasonal?  Can we prevent hair loss?

According to some experts, hair loss can also occur due to diseases. For this reason, in order to prevent hair loss, if there is an underlying disease, it should be treated.

In women, two types of hair loss, called diffuse hair loss (Telogen effluvium) and male pattern hair loss (Androgenic type), are common. It is normal to lose 50-100 hair strands a day. This loss can be seen while taking a shower, combing hair, etc. In male pattern hair loss, thin hair strands and fine hair occur, especially in the upper parts of the hair. Male pattern hair loss usually occurs as a result of ovarian cysts, hormonal disorders and adrenal gland enlargement.

In which season does the hair fall out more?

Experts say that hair loss occurs more in autumn than in other seasons. The reason for this is the decrease in vitamin intake due to the shortage of vegetables and fruits in autumn, and the sudden changes in air temperature and the change of humidity and water ratio in the air.

In autumn, air and moisture are not the only reasons for hair loss; the start of monotonous city life with the end of summer vacation, daily exhausting work, traffic stress, school stress, work stress, and depressive mood that occurs with autumn are also the reasons for the onset and acceleration of hair loss. However, since this situation is seasonal, hair loss decreases after a while and passes by itself. If you still experience intensive hair loss, you should see a doctor.

How to Understand if Your Hair Loss is Seasonal

Normal hair loss rate per day is approximately 50-100 hair strands. With seasonal changes, this number can double.

To find out if your hair loss is seasonal, you can apply a simple test yourself. For this test, your hair should not be washed for at least 3 days. First, move your fingers from the front line of your hair towards the back. Next, place any loose hair on a piece of paper and repeat this five times.

If there are 10 or less than 10 hair strands: It means that everything is fine and this hair loss is quite normal.

If there are 10-15 strands: It can be said that seasonal hair loss is starting. Taking plenty of vitamins will be good for your hair health.

If there are more than 15 strands: You have a hair loss problem and you may need treatment. It is recommended to see a doctor.

How to Prevent Seasonal Hair Loss in Fall/Autumn

  • You can massage your scalp with olive oil or coconut oil to accelerate blood circulation and revitalize hair follicles.
  • To prevent hair loss, wash your hair every 3 days. Clean and well-groomed hair falls out less.
  • Do not dry your hair with a hair dryer immediately after taking a shower because the hair is weaker when it is moist, and combing your hair when it is moist will trigger hair loss.
  • Avoid methods such as hair dye and perm.
  • Comb your hair with a comb with sparse teeth or brushes with natural bristles.
  • Do not tie your hair too often because tying the hair too often will damage the scalp and cause hair loss.
  • Get enough sleep and eat well.
  • Start exercising.

By taking these precautions, you can protect yourself from hair loss.
